Hello
My name is Najwa Khalil, from Gaza, Palestine. I was born in 1964 and I'm a mother of five children.
My passion for art began in childhood when I was eight years old. I practiced drawing with great enthusiasm and love, participating in many school competitions where I achieved outstanding success.
My Story
After finishing high school, I never gave up on my love for drawing. I also expanded my skills by learning sewing from my father, who was a skilled tailor.
We worked together designing and sewing clothes, and I also developed my talents in crochet and Brazilian embroidery, adding fresh artistic touches to my life.
I paused my drawing after getting married to look for my children.
when my son Mohammed was five, art once again filled my life. I discovered his remarkable talent for drawing, after he drew a bicycle with great precision inspired by a cartoon he watched.
I always supported and encouraged him, making sure to gather him and his sisters for shared art sessions where we would draw together, helping them develop their artistic skills.
Mohammed, Shaima and Laila were participated in many schools competitions. Mohammed after graduated he had won second place in a competition in 2012.Now he is a creative animator drawing the suffering of our country.
Also my daughter Shaima became skilled in Brazilian embroidery, crochet, and drawing.
Now both of them got married and have a nice girls who express their feelings through drawing.
I feel immense pride and joy seeing my children and grandchildren express their creativity through art.
In 2016 ,With great love, I have returned to my own drawing and colors.I used to draw in the morning. My workspace is small but full of inspiration .
I have my brushes, oil and watercolors also a window with natural light.
My paintings were inspired from nature, our culture and palestinians suffering.Over the years, I completed many paintings that adorned the walls of my home. Every relative and friend who visited me used to admire them, often taking pictures to capture their beauty.
I also participated in two art competitions in Gaza City in 2022.
In October 2023, disaster struck my life. War broke out, and I was forced to leave my home with my family, leaving behind all my beloved artworks. I had taken photos of the paintings by phone, hoping to return again. But the occupation forces destroyed my home and my city—my paintings were buried under the rubble.
That moment was heartbreaking. I felt deep sorrow , as my artworks were like my silent voice to the world. Since then, I stopped painting.
Now, I live with my family in a worn-out tent in the Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis. It offers no protection from the cold of winter or the heat of summer. I collect and break pieces of wood to make a fire for cooking, and I stand in long lines under the hot sun just to get some water for my family.
I try my best to support them, but we no longer feel safe. The sound of warplanes and artillery surrounds us at all times.
Nevertheless, I am trying to regain my strength to continue my artistic journey. My wish is for this tragedy to end, so I can rise again and create new paintings that express the pain I have lived through.
I will share with you some of the artworks I had photographed before, and I hope you will like them.Thank to everyone who has supported me. I am proud of you all.
